today story is be a friend to tree written by Patricia Lauber illustrated by college Miller trees trees are nice and nice to have around trees are also useful both people and animals meat trees of all kinds sizes and shapes sugar Maples Shagbark hickories eastern white pine Gray but a few everything that's made what was one part of a tree look around you how many wooden things do you say make a list don't forget to count your pencil and maybe your house Uber also comes from trees what is chopped into small pieces the wood softens and becomes pole which is used to make paper and cardboard writing paper book newspapers magazines paper towels cereal boxes Milk Carton and Men make a note of everything that is paper or cardboard don't forget the paper you're writing on some trees can be tapped for their sap sap from different Jesus used to make maple syrup doing gum soap trees are green plants and so they make their own food green plants are the only living things that can do this other living things depend on green plants for food parts of the plant plant eaters you eat parts of trees known as fruits and nuts apples oranges pears cherries peaches walnuts almonds pecans hazelnuts and lots of others chocolate also comes from a tree is made from the seeds of the Cocoa Tree many animals eat parts of leaves do caterpillars eat leaves do deer go to koalas did giraffes and elephants porcupines eat the inner bark of trees as well as Buds and twigs squirrels and Chipmunks gather nuts to eat bees find food in the flowers of trees they collect the pollen and their sugary liquid called nectar birds eat seeds and fruits from trees and those are only a few of the animals that find their food in trees many animals make their homes in trees Birds roost in trees they build nests in razor Young & frees squirrels nest in trees monkeys live in trees some tree frogs spend their whole lives in trees without ever coming down honey bees make their hives in 3 Hollows many other insects also live in trees so do small like spiders deer find shelter Bonita trees of a forest in Woodlands places to hide their young the roots of the trees hold the soil in place they keep it from washing away in heavy rains are floods of water and melting snow when the soil is held in place water sinks into it and that's stored in the ground many people depend on water that stored underground they brought to the surface with a well your house have a well something else very important it has to do with the air we breathe air is made of gases one of them is oxygen it's the gas that our bodies need if the gas and all animals need if we take oxygen out of the air put that Supply is never used up the reason the trees and other green plants keep putting oxygen into the air they give out oxygen as they make their food trees make food in their leaves the leaves can be broad like the ones you see on a maple tree they can be narrow or pointed like the mule shaped leaves you see on the fur or a pine tree oldies Greenleaf do the same work they work to make food for the tree you make food water which they take from the ground so use a gas called carbon dioxide which they take from the air they use sunlight as energy with the energy from the Sun green plants put the water in the carbon dioxide together they make a kind of sugar to make me a food by plants is called photosynthesis word that means putting together with light fortunately for plans when you breathe out you breathe out carbon dioxide they take that carbon dioxide in and then which you need trees need food just to stay alive gross to make new would leave squigs fruit and nuts some of the trees food is used right away some of it is stored for later well making food leaves also make oxygen that they don't need they get rid of the oxygen by putting it out in Pierre much of that oxygen that people and animal need from trees without them we might might not be here all so trees are more than just nice there's something we cannot live without and that's why everyone should my friend trees how could you be a friend to trees lots of things you can do to be a friend to a tree here's just a few see how many more you can think of you can use less paper it's a great way to save 3 if you use a rag or sponge or dish towel instead of a paper towel Chickamauga paper bag when you go shopping now we can't do that right now but in the future you can reuse some of those bags do you only write on one side of your paper still throw it out turn over and use the other paper recycling paper is another way to be a friend when paper is recycled it shredded and mashed and washed and turned into new paper then we need last new paper that means we need to cut down to You Were Trees supposed to all the people in the United States recycle their Sunday newspapers that would save 500000 trees that's a lot of trees and then there's something else you can do if you have a chance help plant tree
