today's stories wonders of the forest written by Francine Sabine illustrated by Michael Willard it's a cool dark in the forest here in the era thin ribbon of sunlight shines through the trees a purple finch sings a pretty song A bright-eyed chipmunk dashes across the ground it's summer the leaves of the trees make a thick green roof over the phone this roof of leaves is called the canopy everything underneath it they'll eat from tree to tree like acrobats in the circus small trees grow Under The Canopy of the tall tall trees this part of the forest is called the understory many kinds of birds build their nests in the forest understory hear they're protected from the wind and the Sun and from the eyes of hungry Hawk and owls fairies and mountain laurel this part of the forest is called hear the forest animals find food and shelter many things grow on the 4th floor Moss mushrooms skunk cabbage and wildflowers this part of the forest is called the herb layer summer is a busy season in the forest and Rain to make food they need to grow the animals that live in the forest are also busy in the summer a young phone nibbles unsweet green plants a mother dough stands close by a snake Glides across the salamander peace out from underneath the rock ready to capture a beetle there are many insects living in on and under the forest floor insects help keep the forest clean a termite which looks like a white ant is one of these cleaners it tunnels into the Fallen trees and lives there if eats the Deadwood another Forest cleaner is the millipede the millipede looks like a small brown Worm but with many many many pairs of legs it's favorite earthworms eat bits of plants on and under the ground they also dig tunnels in the ground these tunnels will keep the soil loose which helps the plants to grow among the many plants in the forest there is one that is not green strange looking fungus it's very different there many different kinds of fungus play as a group are called fungi the mushroom you eat is it kind of fungus most of the fungi in the forest are not safe for people to eat although these are the same plants are safe for some creatures to eat so if you ever see a wild mushroom in the forest don't eat it even if you see another animal eat it it might be safe for them but not for you there are thousands of different fungi in the forest the bracket fungus look like seashells grow on trees Indian pipe is a waxy white plant that has growing on a tree the fungi soil Morel fungi with its Lacy heads grow on the ground all fungi help turn rotting plants into rich soil where new plants to grow in there are other living things on the forest floor there are so small we can see the bacteria bacteria help changed in animals and plants trees and shrubs use to help them grow the summer forest is filled with a humming buzzing insects in the whisper Wind Through the leaves a tree snaps under the Paw of a fox The Sounds scare is a rabbit and sends it scooting rather spend most of their summer days eating they feed on the first green leaves and twigs the rabbit soft fur is brown in the summer when winter comes the fur will turn white the white makes a rabbit hard to see in the snow and helps to hide it what's the rabbit's worst enemies is the fox a clever Hunter the fox feeds on rabbits mice and other small animals Fox pups are born in the spring in a month their parents begin to teach them climb trees to hunt and move quickly and quietly raccoons leave their nest at night to hunt they like all kinds of food small animals toads frogs insects worms berries nuts most raccoons nest entry holes as Autumn comes to the forest the green leaves turn yellow red orange and brown before long they fall to the earth now sunlight shines through the branches and the air is crisp and cool acorns rain fourth floor are nuts that are the favorite of most of the 4th animal squirrels get ready for winter by bearings in the ground What squirrels do not find every Acorn they bury some of these acorns will take root and become oak trees next spring many birds leave the forest in the Autumn they fly south to warmer where food is plentiful this is called migration when the last of the migrating birds leave the Forest Winter is closed account the forest in winter is a cold silent place a blanket of snow covers the ground a bright red cardinal purchase on a green needle Assaf I deer choose the bark of a young birch tree animal tracks. The snow tiny paw prints A Thin Blue Line by the just passed the black bear makes the largest paw prints in the forest the prince are 9 in Long bear sleep a lot in the winter they may sleep for a few days or more than a week at a time then if the day is too cold the wake-up leaves are Dems to look for food and when it gets cold again there go back to sleep some animals sleep that's called hibernation woodchucks and groundhogs do not wake up until warm weather returns winter is a hard time for trees and shrubs the forest strong icy winds and I see storms snap their branches some trees shrubs die because I cannot get water from the Frozen soil what is spring the trees are bare in the patches of snow still on the ground new plants begin to repair sunlight streams through the leafless branches warming the soil send up small green spiky spring brings color to the forest purple violet Rose Colored Lady slippers yellow touch-me-nots this beauty last for a very short time before the greens in the bra before us take over the buds on the trees or shrubs start to open Tiny pale green leaves appear many sounds are heard in the Spring Forest I mail spring peeper sits on the ground and sings This frog is just a bit over an inch long but his song can be heard almost are from his skin on his throat the spring peeper is calling to female peepers soon they will make the female will lay eggs in a small Forest Pond and in just three weeks turtles will hatch from their eggs spring is the time of birth birds build nests and lay eggs millions of insects are born every day for baby take their first steps away from their den when a female opossum her babies are so tiny fit into a small spoon when they're 10 weeks old they will leave their mother's pouch and climb onto her back she will carry them there until the ready to be on their own every year the forest grows and changes a fire may burn down many huge old oak trees but soon young pine trees begin to ride guys were the oak trees once stood in years to come new Oaks will take root and reach for the sun light we will take back the land from the pine trees they will again make a canopy of leaves above the forest insects will eat the leaves birds will eat the insects and the life of the forest Will Go On
