a tree is a plant this is written by Clyde illustrated by Stacey schuett a tree is a plant a tree is a plant a tree is the biggest plant the grows most kinds of trees grow from seeds the way most small plant there are many kinds of trees here are a few of them how many do you know each tree has a different leaf has different branches and different fruits this tree grows in the country in your yard to do you know what kind it is your right this is an apple tree this apple tree came from a seed the seed with small it grew inside an apple have you ever seen an apple seed ask an adult to help you cut an apple in half the seeds are in the center if they look like this moose apple trees come from seeds that are planted sometimes an apple tree grows from a seed that falls to the ground the wind blows the wind blows oil Over the Sea all winter seed lies under the leaves in the soil all winter the ice and the snow and it's into the ground spring comes rain falls the Sun comes out and warms the Earth the sea begins to grow at first the young plant does not look like a tree the tree is very small it only has a stem wood it has no apples on a tree must grow up before each year the tree grows and grows tall in 7 years it's so tall that you can stand under its branches in the spring there are blossoms on the tree spring is Apple Blossom time the blossoms last only for a few days then they fall to the ground now there are green leaves on the tree among the leaves are small apples the apples are where the blossoms were before the apples are green and they're almost too small for you to see the apples grow slowly they grow all during the spring and summer in the fall we can see the apples in the leaves on the branches we can see the branches growing out of the trunk we can see the trunk growing out of the ground we can see the bark on the outside of the tree the bark covers the branches and the trunk like a coat but there's a part of the tree we cannot see we cannot see the roots there under the ground some of the roots are large small tears The Roots grow like branches under the ground a tree could not live without roots Roots hold the trunk in the Grass Roots when the wind blows Roots keep the rain from washing tree out of the ground do something more they take the water from the ground they carry the water into the trunk the tree the trunk carries the water to the branches the branches carry the water hundreds and hundreds of leaves grow on the branches the leaves make food from water and air that makes food when the sunshine the food goes It goes into the trunk and down to the roots it goes in every part of the tree is almost over the leaves turn yellow and brown in fall to the ground now the trees bear all winter dead but the tree is not dead under that coat of bark the tree is alive spring comes again and rain falls the sun warms the Earth the trees blossom in new leaves grow as long-lived the apple tree grows as long as it lives The Apple Tree block spring and apples grow on it when do the apple trees the best in the spring when they're covered with blossoms maybe this summer when they're covered with leaves maybe in the winter and they're all there or in the fall when they're covered with apples so remember a tree is a plant not an animal
