today's story is called in the deep dark Forest in the deep dark Forest written by Paul Home Free illustrated by Carolyn Grace there's a forest are all the trees the same I have dark green leaves this Forest has Oak Birch Maple Spruce and many other kinds of trees let's go into the forest and explore look at all the acorns what kind of tree will they acorns grow into an oak tree that's right but it takes over 100 years for a tiny Acorn to become an oak that's really really really big it looks like maple seeds fly if you throw them in the air here's a group of spruce trees look at all the pine cones on the ground the seeds are hidden right inside wow look at there's a mound of pine needles over there amount of pine needles if a wood ants nest look closely and you'll see that the whole Nest is busy with ants working wow it looks like many different animals and plants make their home in the forest can you see the crow building its nest what's this funny tree stump fungus a fungus is a plant that grows on dead wood might be poisonous hey what made those holes in that dead branch it was probably looking for baby insects for beetles to eat look at all the what's underneath Chuck is crawling bugs and slugs but all of these creatures are very important they help to eat the dead wood when you turn over and you never know what you might find I think it has been here I can I can see their Footprints are tracks like deer tracks and something that looks like fox tracks and mouse tracks now we're getting your clearing up very quietly you see the color of their fur and helps them to be camouflaged can you see the Little Fawn the deer must have heard us and ran away let's see what else there is in the clearing I see butterflies and bees I bet they're visiting the flowers pollen and nectar hey that's right I found Foxhole you know what a fox says Nest is called yes it's called a den it's a squirrel it likes to eat the tender new buds on the trees if you look high up in the trees you might find a big but that's its nest squirrel nest is called a gray it rhymes with the color gray and it's just a big bowl of leaves now hear something interesting to look at on the ground are owl pellets the owls swallows its prey whole then it and Feathers & Fur from its stomach and spits out pellets just like these we saw many animals and plants on our walk to the deep dark Forest how many can you remember today I'm going to see if you can write down all the different plants and animals we discovered in the forest
